UTKirinImage

Yes, UT Kirin is a prolific bedroom recording project from Berkeley's HR Huber-Rodriguez. No, he's not quite as prolific or polished as Will Toledo's early Car Seat Headrest days, but there's a lot there and definitely something interesting going on here. Luckily, UT Kirin's most recent recordings also happen to be their most interesting. "Daughter of the Hadhramaut" and "2010 Ezra Koenig" are a couple of weird, yet catchy and endearing indie rock songs about living a jaded life in California.

Rodriguez recently teamed up with locals Future Myth to perform UT Kirin tracks live, and their first show is tonight at the lovable Octopus Literary Salon.

Christian Zamora started bAd bAd a few years ago as a bedroom recording project, (and one that we've loved from the start). Despite the fact that Zamora's left the Bay Area to manage a bar in St. Kitt's for the past six months, bAd bAd managed to record their first LP as a full band that has just been released via SS Records. To celebrate, Zamora is taking a Thanksgiving vacation on the (American) West Coast to share the album in its live form and sling some vinyl along the way. bAd bAd originally dubbed their sound as "Turkish surf mariachi", and although the sound has evolved, the spirit of colliding cultures and relentless rhythms thankfully remain. A sampler from the self-titled LP is below.

In addition to dates in Portland, Vancouver, and Seattle, bAd bAd performs for their hometown tonight at the Eagle with Andy Human, tour mates Turquoiz Noiz, and STUCKO.

Everybody loves the Stranger Things soundtrack, right? I'd dismissed it as unearned hype until I'd like, actually watched the show and fell in love with the creepy blend of modern-yet-retro sounding synth instrumentals. Shortly after that, we received a submission from the copy-and-paste-able B/I/R/T/H/D/A/Y and their track "Skyropes". It starts off with guitars that instantly make me feel like I'm in an F-14 with Tom Cruise, but over the course of the song, the synths take on a more and more prominent role and transport me to Creepy Indiana quarries. It doesn't hurt that they can shred the guitar:

B/I/R/T/H/D/A/Y also recently released their second single, "Late Night Tails," which should transport you to a montage that involves cocktails, dancing, a mysterious walk down a moonlit alley, and who knows what else? Like "Skyropes", it's an homage to a specific era that manages to avoid cheesyness that often plagues '80s tribute — B/I/R/T/H/D/A/Y is far too earnest and executes with too much talent to be considered a joke.

B/I/R/T/H/D/A/Y's debut live performance is tonight at Milk Bar. Proceeds from the show will be split between Planned Parenthood and International Institute of the Bay Area, a non-profit that provides low cost immigration legal services to people in the Bay Area.

Magic Magic Roses celebrate ‘Dusk’ release tomorrow night

magic magic roses

San Francisco's Magic Magic Roses, purveyors of dark-yet-beautiful, harmony-driven country/folk have just released a new album entitled Dusk on Seattle-based label Plume Records. On Dusk, the two-part harmonies from Kate Sweeney and Sarah Simon are still the heart of the music, but MMR incorporates more broad instrumentation than they had on previous releases. It's highly recommended for these gray, rainy, and sad times:

Magic Magic Roses will be hosting a release party in Potrero Hill tomorrow night, featuring China and Hectorine. In addition to the music, there will be a silent auction featuring donations from a host of local businesses, with all proceeds being donated to Planned Parenthood. Also, China just released a dandy of a video for their song "Honey Trap," that co-stars Yea-Ming Chen along with the band. The visuals successfully blend death and bleakness with a quirky sense of humor, which China somehow makes work in their music as well. I was unsuccessful in researching Hectorine, but I'm sure they will also help make it a lovely Saturday night.

Best of 2016: Russell Jelinek’s favorite local lyrical moments

China

I've never been one to sit down and follow along to the lyrics when I listen to an album, but there were a few lyrical moments from local artists that really punched me in the gut this year. Here are some of my favorites.

"I got big money, all facts, petty bitches can fall back" - Kamaiyah on E-40's "Petty":

The words aren't exactly thought-provoking, but Kamaiyah's delivery of this line made me stop what I was doing, spin around, grin ear-to-ear, and immediately start the song over just to get to this line again. The choppy cadence leading up to the rhythmic flow of this line felt like an ode to Uncle Earl, who she somehow manages to steal the spotlight from on "Petty". Kamaiyah's a goddam star and is showing that she deserves to be one with every verse.

The entire second verse of Apache's "The Riot":

Man, Apache knows how to have fun while disturbing the peace. The second verse of "The Riot" references burning cars, smoking cocaine(?), employment as a Molotov Cocktail thrower, and chicks, he wants to see some chicks! These guys are just so crazy and out of control, wow! Glad to see Apache making sure rock and roll ain't dead in San Francisco.

The "Woo" in the middle of the sax solo of Ezra Furman's "Wobbly":.

OK, so this isn't really a "lyric" and "Wobbly" came out in 2015, and it sounds like Ezra has left the Bay. That being said, I didn't spend a lot of time listening to Furman's outstanding Perpetual Motion People until this year, and it's my list so I'll do what I want. Anyway, the fact that Furman can seamlessly place a simple, laid-back-yet-joyful "Woo!" in the middle of an album full of gut-wrenching, heartbreaking lyrics and top notch songwriting is incredible. There's plenty of moments that I anticipate throughout Perpetual Motion People, but none of them bring me pure joy like that little "Woo".

"So I watched her place all morning, and I couldn't believe what I'd seen...I saw another man, doin' the dishes, I saw him holdin' hands with my Marie" from China's "Just Another Outlaw"

China's Pool of Tears has sadness to spare, but this little detail from "Just Another Outlaw" especially stood out. Yeah, our narrator ignored his friends' warnings about this woman and he's kinda stalking her, but the image of another man doing the dishes made me see what he sees and feel what he feels, and kinda feel sympathy for him. It's a simple visualization that made a good song damn near perfect.

Meernaa

Oakland genre-less band Meernaa has been busy in the studio recording a host of singles to be released in 2017, and we're pleased to share their first release of 2017 with "Redwood", via the incredible video below.

The visuals for the "Redwood" video began when its director, Cooper Kenward, was recording an album of his own at Tiny Telephone, where Meerna's Carly Bond and Rob Shelton work. Between sessions, Bond and Shelton shared "Redwood" with Kenward, who immediately connected and wanted to make a video for it.

"Cooper started conjuring up some concepts about the duality of the spirit in urban life and nature," explains Bond. "The importance of getting back to nature to heal and find balance." The incredible creature in the dream sequence was created by Eliza Smith (costume) and Kean Eggett (mask), and brought to life by the sweet dance moves of Natalie Warner. Carly tells me the furry dancer was designed to allude to the "Wilder Mann" series by Charles Frèger, as well as the works of Jim Henson. "We wanted the creature to feel a little dark, intimidating and otherworldly, but still maintain a sense of silliness so as not to take it too seriously," Bond added. "Which, I think, is something of both Cooper and my own ethos in making music and art."

In addition to the visuals, Meernaa makes a danceable track out of non-traditional rhythms and sparse instrumentals, which allow Carly Bond's voice shine through. And at the end, she kind of blows me away when she shows off the low end of her vocal range.

Meernaa has been busy in the studio, with plans to release several singles in 2017 while also working toward an EP or full-length. They also perform live at the Chapel tomorrow night, opening for Mirah.

John McBain Press Photo B&W

San Francisco resident John McBain has been on the fringe of rock-and-roll royalty for much of his career. He was a founding member of Monster Magnet, collaborated with Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron in Wellwater Conspiracy, and was a member of Queens of the Stone Age for their first three gigs after participating in Josh Homme's Desert Sessions, in addition to a variety of collaborations with lesser-known artists.

February 24, one of our favorite local labels, Vacant Stare Records, will release McBain's Accidental Soundtracks Vol. 1: The Alpha Particle, on VHS. (Yes, VHS). McBain has been in his studio combining his psych-influenced instrumentals with found footage to create 16 music videos for a rare analog experience. Get your first taste of his acreation below with the video for "First Earth Battalion", the 9th song on the album, and stream or purchase on Vacant Stare's Bandcamp. Vacant Stare's Rob Miller has told me there are literally only 25 VHS cassettes of the release available, so you might not want to sleep on this if you like what you see.

Vantana Row

Vantana Row is a married couple (Volly Rocket and Jamey Blaze), who live in a van in Alameda and make what I guess could be called hip-hop influenced chiptune punk screamo? And somehow it works! January 1, they released 4ourIver, which is one of many albums they've released. While I personally haven't been able to listen to all 23 tracks in a row or analyze the lyrics, (and I'm not sure I want to), as I skip around I'm hearing songs that aren't quite like anything I normally hear. Which is why I keep coming back. Give it a listen yourself:

Vantana Row have been making what Volly Rocket calls "OK records" since 2015, but she tells me 4ourIver is a step toward a more defined sound. Volly also let me know that the two of them do pretty much everything in their van, personally and musically. They even record drums in their van. Vantana Row also has a long series of youtube videos that are a mixture of music videos and a documentation of life in their van. Basically, you can spend the rest of your day digging through Vantana Row content on the web if you're so inclined. Here's a video from "Season 3":

Meanest Man Contest

Meanest Man Contest, an off-the-wall hip-hop/R&B/soft rock duo, released their debut album way back in 2003, and somehow they're still making great music today. Their most recent release is a cover of late San Francisco band Thee More Shallows' "Night at the Knight School". Meanest Man Contesttook a wonderfully odd song and applied their somewhat signature style of what I guess could be described as crisp/clean chiptune meshed with big fuzzy drums. It's all a great fit, and is available as a 7" via Weirdo Weapons, MMC's Eric Steuer's merch company, which also offers some very cool SF-related pins.

In addition to the More Shallows cover, Meanest Man Contest also updated a couple of their EP's with remixes and improved mastering - 2008's Some People and 2009's Partially Smart. They're both available on spotify (or below) and would be great to revisit on a rainy Tuesday afternoon.

Clipping at the Starline Social Club for Noise Pop 2017, by Jon Bauer

Clipping. at the Starline Social Club (photo: Jon Bauer)

Note: This review is for the Clipping. show February 25 - all photos are from their show at the Starline Social Club in Oakland February 24.

Clipping., the noise-rap project fronted by Daveed Diggs, played a pair of sold-out shows for Noise Pop on each side of the Bay this past weekend

For Saturday night's show, Oakland's Jay Stone kicked off the night donning a red velvet bathrobe and performing a couple of mellow tunes, including the challenging "Lake Merritt" off his 2014 collaboration with Monster Rally, Foreign Pedestrians. The crowd was mostly unfamiliar with Stone, but they quickly warmed up to him with his charisma, t-shirt giveaways, and excellent new material advising the crowd not to trust flying monkeys.

On the surface, Baseck's harsh electronica seems like a good fit to open for clipping., but without a vocalist, it just ends up feeling....harsh. Granted, solo sampler performers generally aren't my thing and Baseck didn't have a mic for some reason, but the crowd just never seemed to connect to his set.

They were clearly primed for clipping. and Hamilton star Diggs. Diggs is a handsome and charismatic dude who makes the noisy beats of producers William Hutson and Jonathan Snipes more interesting - letting the listener know that rhythm is there when it wouldn't be readily apparent in an instrumental. On the flip side, the beats probably make Diggs' technical delivery more compelling as well - it's a great combo. The crowd knew all the appropriate callbacks and hung on every word - and the sheer number of words Diggs can fit into a few bars is astounding. Diggs is a star even without the insane hype of a hit musical, so don't expect to see clipping. in a venue as small as Brick and Mortar and Starline the next time they come to town.

On Spooky Mansion's latest, they've taken a step away from the sunny surf rock sounds for their latest EP, I'm the Moon, You're the Wave (so plz change w/ me). You'll still get plenty of lead singer Grayson Converse's impassioned wails, but they added elements such as heavy bass and drum samples that give them a completely new feel.

The unique vibe for I'm the Moon, You're the Wave, began with "Night Owl", a song that Converse says was just an instrumental with a chorus. He explains, "...when my friend Rose Droll laid down rap verses on it I was like, 'oh yah, thats a thing you can do'." "You're the Wave" was Converse trying to create an "atmospheric pop song", while "I'm the Moon" was a specific attempt at writing a jazz-influenced hip-hop song. "There is something to be said for intentionally trying to write in a different genre," says Converse. "it makes you think differently and can result in some exciting new ideas and sounds." I like the different thinking (and results), and I think you will too. You can purchase a cassette version of I'm the Moon, You're the Wave (so plz change w/ me) via Gaylord's Party Music, or pick it up at their release show Saturday night at Amnesia.

Joining Spooky Mansion at their release show will be Portland's Roselit Bone and Oakland's The Saxophones . Gaylord's Party Music is also collaborating with Friendship Fever to release Party and Friendship - a zine and limited-edition cassette, both of which feature the bands on the bill. Gentle Spirit

Since it's first release with Tino Drima last year, Gaylord's Party Music has built a wonderful roster of Bay Area artists that are always just a little left of center. Their latest signee, San Francisco's Gentle Spirit, is no exception. Today, we get to share "We Finish Where We Start" off his new Dearest EP, which will be

Gentle Spririt is the project of Marcus Stoesz, who previously fronted Kansas band Paper Airplanes (and currently co-directs Rock Band Land). His voice sounds familiar, yet at the same time feels completely new, while his high notes seem effortless yet still are able to evoke a sense of pain. The vocals are certainly the highlight of "We Finish Where We Start", although the rhythm is also intriguing. The song begins with choppy starts and stops that transition into a swaying chorus and outro, but repeated listens showed me that the swaying was there the entire time. "We Finish Where We Start" is below - click through to purchase the cassette.

Gentle Spirit will release his Dearest EP on Gaylord's Party Music March 31 at Amnesia. Killer Whale is also performing and releasing HIS Gaylord's Party Music cassette the same night. Sounds like a party.

Killer Whale

Killer Whale's unique sound has been on my radar for quite some time, so I'm pleased as punch to give you all your first listen at his most formal release to date - the Casual Crush LP, out March 31 on Gaylord's Party Music. Casual Crush's sound is located somewhere close to where yacht rock, R&B, and the beach meet with laid-back rhythms and Thomas Johnson's drawl holding it all together.

Casual Crush was recorded in New Orleans, where Johnson spent several years living and performing. Although there aren't obvious nods to jazz or bayou rock from New Orleans, Johnson's doses of soulful cool are tribute enough. Listen to Casual Crush below, and click through to preorder that cassette.

As we mentioned last week, Killer Whale will be joined by label-mates Gentle Spirit for a grand ol' release shindig Friday night at Amnesia.

BABYSINGL

Actual Wolf is the project of Minnesota native and current Oakland resident Eric Pollard, who has had a brief stint in Nashville since leaving Minnesota and winding up in the Bay permanently in 2015. Pollard's brand of music evokes country artists ranging from Vince Gill to Willie Nelson to Steve Earle without being beholden to any one sound or influence. What impresses me most, however, is how he can make a song that hits you in the gut while his deliveries and rhythms are so subtle and laid-back. Actual Wolf has a new LP on the way, but first take a listen to his most recent release, Itasca - it's wonderful:

As for the new stuff, Pollard tells me he hopes to have his next LP, Faded Days out digitally this summer and on vinyl in the fall. For now, you can give the first single, "Baby Please" a spin over on The Current, or catch Pollard and his band at the Eagle Thursday night. His band's a good one - featuring veteran San Francisco country musicians Misisipi Mike Wolf on guitar and Ian Taylor Sutton on pedal steel.

Cocktails

Some of our favorite local pop-rockers, Cocktails, have laid pretty low since the release of their second full-length, Hypochondriac, but not for much longer. Tonight, Cocktails opens for NE-HI at the Rickshaw before heading across the pond for a tour of Europe in May. As it turns out, one of the bookers for a recent Apache/BT's European tour is perhaps a huge Cocktails fan who actually saw them perform at SXSW(!) several years ago. Through the Apache folks, he got in touch with Cocktails and set up 13 shows in 14 nights for them. If you're on holiday and want to see some hometown kids play rock and roll, (or you're reading from Europe), check the dates below.

Cocktails tour

As an added bonus, their new buds at Alien Snatch Records out of Berlin are pressing of copies of Hypochondriac for the tour, and the band hopes to have a few copies available back home as well. (It's currently available on cassette and digitally via the wonderful Father/Daughter). By the way, did you miss Hypochondriac when it came out? Well, if you did, you sure missed a damn fine pile of hooks and should correct that mistake now. If you didn't, now's a good time to listen again:

Outer Embassy

Oakland drum, bass, and synth trio Outer Embassy is set to release their debut LP June 2. Outer Embassy "was born from the desire to find a distinct crossing point of 70s Krautrock experimentalism, West-African soul rhythms, and sonic synthery." At their core, Outer Embassy is simply making dance music that isn't quite like anything you've heard. Drum and bass are the driving force throughout the LP, with the use of synths and vocals adding sonic color that never draw attention away from the rhythm. Their influences mentioned are present on the album, but they aren't beholden to them - the end result is an entirely new psych dance experience that feels completely natural.

On their video for "Ironstrike", they of course have a great, steady rhythm, but the synth explosions will definitely help wake you up. Lead vocalist Aaron Deer also directed the video, appropriately including plenty of bursts of color. You can purchase Outer Embassy's LP on CD or cassette via bandcamp and stream below. You can catch Outer Embassy in person tomorrow night at Starline opening for Dengue Fever or next month at Huichica at Gundlach Bundschu winery in Sonoma.

kid trails silk

Patrick Jeffords of Kid Trails and Chris Prudhomme have been collaborating since Jeffords toured on bass with Prudhomme's Painted Palms, and the two always had a mutual respect for each others' songwriting. Prudhomme has moved on to New Orleans, but he had the idea of reconnecting with Jefford's for a split EP cassette with Kid Trails and his solo project Silk, which is set for a June 2 release on Death Records.

It's a bit of a sentimental album for Jeffords, as it was the last self-recorded music he recorded on his laptop before it died last November. Prudhomme also recorded his contributions on his laptop, and the good-time melodies from both Silk and Kid Trails are a perfect fit for Death Records' wonderfully curated pop catalog. We've got a pair of tracks to give you your first taste of the EP: the toe-tapping "My B" from Kid Trails and the 90's pop-radio-influenced "Ladder (Got my Stuff)" from Silk.

You can pre-order the cassette via Death Records or pick it up tonight at a release show at Honey Hive Gallery.

And guess what? We're lucky enough to give you the first taste of the album with a great new track, "Say What You Mean".

Latitude frontwoman and primary songwriter Amy Fowler says "Say What You Mean" was a naturally easy songwriting experience, describing it as "one of those tunes that downloaded to my head straight from the Mothership, just after waking while still in a dream state." The song is dominated by a sharp guitar riff that Fowler's vocals dance with during the verses before bringing in layers upon layers of jangly guitars, synths, and acoustic strumming that naturally meld an array of influences from the 80's. Plus, everything about the track exudes a cool confidence that makes the apostrophe in the album title entirely appropriate. Listen:

L'atitude is available on cassette or digitally via Royal Oakie, or at Latitude's release show June 1 at the Make-out Room. After the June 1 show, they'll also be heading down the coast for a mini tour of Southern California.

Sacramento's Pregnant makes electronic pop music that is definitely weird, but also deeply moving and thoughtful. June 30, the Daniel Trudeau fronted outfit is adding to their extensive discography with the release of their full length entitled Duct Tape. Duct Tape will be available via three labels, Madeline Kenney's Copper Mouth, Golden Brown out of Portland, and South Carolina's Plastic Response.

Since Pregnant is semi-local, on a local label, and frequently perform in the Bay, we're lucky enough to debut their new video for Duct Tape's "Wimp", which was also created by Daniel Trudeau. "The song 'Wimp' is about how we deal with romantic monogamous relationships," explains Trudeau. "It's hopefully a mantra for anyone who may have thought, 'How do I leave my partner but retain a friendship?' or questions like, 'Ultimately, what is the meaning of this relationship I'm in?'" Musically, "Wimp" initially sounds like it could be a feel-good track from late 90's pop radio, but it seems to toy with getting a groove without quite finding it. There's something intriguing about the near-groove and a mood teetering between sadness and optimism that keeps me coming back for repeat listens. I also enjoy the shots of the Ken doll and skinny balloon. Enjoy it yourself:

Pregnant has a pair of San Francisco dates over the next month leading up to the Duct Tape release - June 7 at Milk Bar and June 25 at the Elbo Room. The album will be available via cassette from Golden Brown and as a 7" single with "Wimp" and "Jar of Clay" from Golden Brown, Copper Mouth, and Plastic Response.
